The Paducah School of Art and Design’s Summer Master Artist Workshops have been an exciting and dynamic addition to the school’s already robust schedule. When you participate, you are given an opportunity for hands-on learning from some of the world’s finest working artists.

Narrative Ceramics with Imagery • Benjie Heu —— Begins July 5

Benjie Heu is Professor of Ceramics at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University, a post-baccalaureate degree from UMASS Dartmouth, and a Bachelorof Fine Arts degree from the University of Montevallo. His artwork is exhibited nationally and internationally in juried, invitational, and solo exhibitions. He conducts visiting artist workshops and residencies at universities and other institutions across the United States.

In this three-day, hands-on clay workshop,participants will create unique wall-mounted figurative ceramics that will be layered with imagery, text, and patterns. Benjie will share his creative inspiration and demonstrate his process of hand-building with clay, colored slips, stencils, sgrafitto, wax resist, inlaid underglazes, and glazing for cone 6. Firing of the work created will need to be done after the workshop dates.

Color and Expression: Paint What You Love • Tim Jaeger —— Begins July 5

Tim Jaeger was raised in Paducah, Kentucky. He moved to Sarasota, Florida, in 1998 to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree from the Ringling College of Art + Design and has emerged as a leading artist in South Florida and beyond. Tim continues to maintain his Sarasota and his paintings can be found in numerous public and private collections in the United States and abroad. Let go and allow your art to take place without preconceived notions. The journey an artist strives for is to arrive at a place where discoveries happen. Leave your comfort zone and enter a world of exciting and expressive painting. This class will focus on paintings that have light, color and attitude! Working on a variety of grounds, we will explore underpainting techniques, mark making, and significant color choices to push a painting further. Learn to simplify your approach and develop a personal style. All painting mediums allowed. Open to beginner, intermediate and
advanced painters.

Reduce Future Waste, One Cloth at a Time! • Lily Liu —— Begins July 5

Lily Liu started her art journey as a ceramic artist prior to embracing fiber art during graduate school. Her work deals with finding the balance of chance and plan, mindlessness and mindfulness. Most of her recent work has been focusing on reuse, recycle and repurpose to reduce future waste. Lily earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in Crafts from Kent State University, Ohio and her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of Manitoba, Manitoba, Canada. Her fiber and ceramic work have been exhibited nationally and internationally.

This hands-on fiber workshop introduces participants to the creation of a unique line of wearable art through the use of repurposed materials. The class will explore multiple techniques such as dyeing, discharging, deconstructing, reconstructing, embellishing, printing and stitching.

Beauty in the Mundane • Jina Seo —— Begins July 12

Jina Seo is the Assistant Professor of Metal and Jewelry at Missouri State University. Her practice explores the relationships between body, garment, desire, and space. By transforming materials into symbolic wearable objects, she creates a visual dialogue that uncovers the hidden intimate and sensual power. She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Kookmin
University at Seoul. A recipient of the Fountainhead Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2016, she was also chosen as one of the SNAG Emerging Artists 2016 at SOFA Chicago and received a Gold Award for the ITAMI International Craft Exhibition in 2010. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including Munich Jewellery Week 2017.

Explore nontraditional materials – domestic, natural, edible, fabric, leather or found objects – to create a wearable artwork that reveals the beauty of the mundane. Investigate methods to incorporate alternative materials with metal components. This class will cover the basics of cold connecting, basic settings, and pin mechanisms. Beginner to advanced students are welcome.
